How do I buy a Turkish Gulet?
We strongly suggest that you familiarize yourself with the buying process in advance of your arrival to Turkey. Your most important decision will be the choice of gulet which you decide to purchase, which should be guided by what you wish to do with the yacht. Whether your gulet is to be exported for private use, used for commercial charter in Turkey or in the EU, or a Do-It-Yourself fixer-upper project, you will need to carefully consider your needs and find the right boat for these needs.

  Why should I buy now?
There has never been a better time to purchase a Turkish gulet. As Turkey prepares for possible entry to the European Community, many new laws and procedures are being implemented, including workplace safety, insurance, social security and import restrictons on tropical hardwoods. With each passing year, it will become more and more expensive to build new gulets. A well-built, well-maintained gulet will increase in value as it will not be replaceable for the initial cost.

  What is the purchase procedure?
The procedure to purchase a yacht in Turkey is similar to other European countries. Upon making an offer which has been accepted by the owner, your broker will put the sale conditions in writing for signatures by all sides. After paying a deposit to secure the yacht, the formal purchase will begin with sea trials, work agreed to be done on the yacht by the owner, change of owner at the port of registry and change of flag.

Should I use a yacht charter broker?
Your best ally in purchasing a gulet suitable for your needs is a good broker. Your broker will guide you through the purchase process, including negotiating the best possible price for the gulet, arranging all of the pre and post sales paperwork, providing you with documented history of the maintenance of the gulet, and ensuring that you are aware of any work, upgrades or modifications needing to be done on the yacht. Once a purchase agreement has been verbalized, the broker should provide you with a pre-sales agreement which will list the payment amount and conditions as well as any work to be completed by the seller prior to the final sale. Depending on the agreement, the buyer will then send a deposit to secure the yacht and his intention to proceed with the purchase. This deposit is sometimes held by the broker but may sometimes also be made directly to the seller. Your broker should then arrange for the requirements as required for change of flag, marine survey, sea trials, export, Turkish charter license and transfer of ownership, at which time the remainder of the balance is payable.

Can I have foreign crew on my yacht in Turkey?
You may have qualified foreign crew on a private yacht in Turkey, but not for commercial yachts. Charter yachts, even with a foreign flag, will require that you have qualified Turkish crew.

Do I need to have a Turkish flag?
You need not fly a Turkish flag on your private or commercial yacht in Turkey. You will still need to have a Turkish charter license. However, it can be less costly to register your yacht with a Turkish flag. For this, you will need to register your yacht with a Turkish yachting agency.

What sort of revenue can I expect if I charter my yacht commercially in Turkey?
The charter season in Turkey is 20 weeks, beginning in May and finishing in October. Depending on your yacht and its condition, you should expect a minimum of 10 weeks charter to cover your annual costs. Much of this will depend on how you market the charter of your yacht and whether you list it with local brokers or market these weeks yourself.
